Tryg and I have both volunteered many years at hospice. Tryg in the Residence, and me mostly In-Home Support, caregiver evening out, & grief walks. At hospice, we’ve supported strangers and also friends and family members at their end of life.
In February 2024, a friend arrived with his wife to spend her last living days at Ruddy Shenkman hospice (out in the wilds of Kanata). I was immediately included by hospice staff into this circle. From the moment they entered the building, both of these people — the friend who arrived as an exhausted caregiver and his beloved — were treated with a heart-felt combination of kindness and respect. From the volunteers and hospice admin staff, to the nurses and PSWs, to the doctors… everyone gave so generously of their time and knowledge and experience. This couple — both of them — were attended to with gentleness, their wishes were accommodated, experienced nurses, PSWs and doctors guided them through what was going on, and waited patiently for (sometimes difficult) care decisions that needed to be made. It was obvious how well supported they were during this painful and difficult time. The care they received, the supportive space, and people who work there created the circumstances that allowed a peaceful, loving and gentle death.
Your donation helps support this far-too hidden & unknown jewel that has been operating in our community since the early ‘00s. It is absolutely the next best thing to dying at home and we in Ottawa are so fortunate to have Hospice Care Ottawa as part of our dying and death support system. Please give generously.
